IELTS Writing Task 2 asks you to write a 250-word essay in 40 minutes, responding to an opinion, discussion, or problem-solution prompt. Examiners score four criteria equally: task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammar.
Timing strategy (40 minutes)
| Time | Task |
|---|---|
| 5 minutes | Read the question carefully, decide your position, plan 2–3 main points |
| 30 minutes | Write the essay |
| 5 minutes | Check grammar, spelling, and word count |
Identify the question type first
- Opinion (Agree/Disagree): "To what extent do you agree?"
- Discussion: "Discuss both views and give your opinion."
- Problem-Solution: "What problems does this cause, and what solutions can you suggest?"
- Two-part question: "Why is this happening, and is it a positive or negative development?"
Common mistake: Answering the wrong question type — for example, only giving your opinion when the question asks you to "discuss both views." This alone can cap your Task Response score.
Recommended structure
- Introduction (2–3 sentences): paraphrase the question, then state your position clearly.
- Body paragraph 1: first main idea + explanation + example.
- Body paragraph 2: second main idea + explanation + example.
- Conclusion (1–2 sentences): summarise your position — no new ideas.
Phrases that help your score
| Purpose | Phrase |
|---|---|
| Stating opinion | "I firmly believe that…" / "In my view…" |
| Adding a point | "Furthermore, …" / "In addition to this, …" |
| Giving an example | "For instance, …" / "A clear example of this is…" |
| Acknowledging the other side | "While it is true that…, it is also important to consider…" |
Worked example (Opinion essay)
Question: "Some people think universities should focus on academic subjects, while others believe they should teach practical, job-related skills. Discuss both views and give your opinion."
Universities have traditionally focused on academic knowledge, but many now argue that practical, career-focused skills deserve equal attention. This essay will examine both perspectives before presenting my own view.
On one hand, academic subjects build critical thinking and a deep understanding of a field, which forms the foundation for further research and innovation. For instance, a strong grounding in theory allows engineers to solve entirely new problems, not just familiar ones.
On the other hand, many students enter university primarily to secure employment, and a purely academic curriculum may leave them underprepared for the workplace. Universities that combine theory with internships or practical modules tend to report stronger graduate employment outcomes.
In my view, the strongest approach combines both: a solid academic foundation, paired with practical opportunities such as internships, gives students the best of both worlds.
Band 7+ tip: Vary your sentence structures (simple, compound, complex) and avoid repeating the same linking words. Using "furthermore" three times in one essay actually lowers your Coherence and Cohesion score compared to varying your connectors.
